I've never seen that video before. I LOVE it. I love the feel from the music, the movement, the transitions. The love the obscurity and abrupt changes of frames. It really does exemplify the Yves Saint Laurent consumer. There's a certain strength that's exhude through the clip. Gosh, I love Yves Saint Laurent.

Sean O'Pry is so dreamy. I think it's the lips. They're so...lucious. haha! So this spread was in Man About Town. I love the perspective and use of landscape. It's almost like they used a blue/green screen and photoshopped the scenery in. But it's so farfetched looking and stylized that it looks like they were really on location. I love the clarity.

The article is pretty good, raising awareness of the insecurity of the male nudity from a man's perspective along with reference to women, and in some case relative to women. Since last post had Ali Stephens, I thought I continue with the theme. :) I love this spread. I love big hair. I would love to see someone walk down the street with that big of a hair that's not from Brooklyn or from a movie. Even though Ali only has that one thing she does with her lips, I love how her eyes are so sultry. She brings an awkward chic to the clothes. Oddly enough, I get a sense of intelligence from Ali in these photos. Perhaps it's the conservative two pieces. But still. Love.

Drama Queen or just another ol' queen?

The name for this shoot was "Drama Queen." I don't know if Alasdair McLellan grew up in the suburbs or something but this is subtle to me. For me, it's not something outlandish to see people like this. I mean, fashion wise. When I think of Drama Queen, I think of Dior couture dress with layers of Vivienne Westwood. The concepts are bland and there's not mix-n-match. It's a boring old queen. A queen, in the gay sense, can dress better or at least have more creativity. And as much as I'm bored of the Balenciaga florals, I love this color and the lurking behind the tree. It's like pretty moss on a tree.

Reason why I brought this up was because the French wants to ban skinny promotions of any kind. I will use a statement Karl used to defend skinny models, "Too skinny isn't the problem. There is a big obesity problem, why not focus on that? huh?"

Most times, people liquidate their assets when the owner is dead or when they're going bankrupt but Karl had so much that his little spring cleaning is over 100euro.

Rick Owen is currently one of my favorite new designers. He beats to the drum with his own sewing needle and you could see why through this piece. I love how he captured the sensuality of the plunging neckline along with the off-shoulder appeal. I also like the symmetric cut. Also, I like how it's a pseudo-oversize sweater. It's transeasonal, which is totally in right now because of global warming. It's also great for dates on a cool day where you could warm yourself but still expose your collar bones to turn your date on. haha.

Maybe it's because I have a little alcohol in my system; it's very little, but that picture definitely looks like a mushroom, or a penis. But I'm leaning more towards the later. I could see Madonna wearing this VICTORVICTORIA piece, or Lindsay Lohan. The picture could also reference an avant-garde lamp?

Toreror of my Heart; GQ Style Spring/Summer 2008

The first thing that came to mind was Bizet's "Toreador Song" from Carmen. Amusing, I wondered whether bullfighting would be more popular if men that looked like this, dressed in Prada would enhance it's popularity. I could see Miuccia (Prada) going to such events...Or even Lagerfeld, sitting underneath shadow of the palm tree, held by Brad Koenig, Karl's favorite man model.

But then my mind raced further and I thought it would be amusing if my high school principal had wear these outfits, like the Thom Browne gray floral jacket. Following, I imagined had everyone on my campus dressed like this as their daily outfits. If only the world was this fun.

What David Bradshaw did with some of these pieces were lovely. I love how Prada's feminine knitted pieces became manly on Rainer, the model. I also love his use of flowers in the pieces. It's nice that the flowers doesn't seem out of place - like it was meant to fit. I'm going to buy some fresh flowers and stick it all over my wardrobe now...Just kidding. I'm too anal for flower placement on my clothes - I would probably stop every ten feet to make sure every single one is put back into place.

Not by My Hair is Adrogyny Over

I like this spread. Why? Because often times, androgyny is portrayed as a woman looking like a man but not vice versa. Also, men are often put in women's close but their features are still intact, like their short hair. So in this instance, I like that the man, Henzo, feminine attributes are accentuated. If Henzo's hair wasn't lighter, I don't think I would be able to tell who is who in some pictures.

If I was over 6 feet, I would grow Rapunzel-like hair too. And what would I do with hair that cascade down my chest for miles? I would learn to knit, and every night I would knit my hair a new ensemble. Now someone should make a collection or editorial spread with that idea!

So congruent with my post previous to this one, I was praising Pilati and his work at Yves Saint Laurent (YSL). And I realized why won't they let him venture into couture? Isn't that a pleasant idea? He clearly has control of the fabrics with his minimalism structure pieces and sharp lines. If he wanted to, he could rival Nicolas Ghesquiere's Balenciaga pieces. (Which reminds me, I'll do a comparison between YSL and Balenciaga in a future post).

I think Stefano Pilati would be a great couture-r. I believe since he's still only been the director for a short period, the big bosses still wants to see if he's able to carry out more editor's top favorite seasons. If so, then they'll give him reign to do couture. Also, the world of couture is expensive and not as lucrative as pret-a-porters, but I think with recent collections, YSL's income should stabilize and give Pilati a chance. I imagine Valentino but more formal and futuristic. No? Valentino has that minimalistic decadence, but it's often feminine and soft, in both structure and color.

But if I was given the chance to decide whether Pilati should be in charge of that, hands down Pilati has my vote.

Case Study: Maison Martin Margiela VS YSL, & More

One way to differentiate between the greats and the novice is through detailing. I love looking at the detailed pictures and seeing how the fabric is manipulated; where the lines are placed; and how these small things add to the ensemble as a whole. One of the thing I love about Stefano Pilati is his ability to make pictures quietly screaming minimalism. It's that deafening pitch where you can't hear it but it impacts you. Or at least for me, this is the case. From afar, his pieces are strung together with a fluidity of bareness, no elaborate flashes of juxtaposed fabric mediums that makes it uncomfortable to the eye. Everything just seems to fit, like it belong with a certain elegance. It's a woman of confidence that knows that in the world, you don't need much, and less is more. (Ironic, however, you need money for this minimalism. haha).

But in regards to this sleeve, I love the black lining of it and the sliver that exposes the arm almost to the shoulder. It's sort of poetic because the ensembles carry a serious tone, along with the mood that's given from the presentation of the models, but the sliver provides a playful tone to it - a certain vulnerability. In most conservative cultures, excess skin is not encouraged, but this creeping line accentuates the playfulness of femininity. I just love the complication of Pilati's pieces and the quiet decadence that's intertwined with the pieces.

This can also be seen in the sunglasses that went along with the collection. It reminded me of Maison Martin Margiela's blackmarker sunglasses from Spring 2008 collection, but it's a little more personal than Margiela's. Where Margiela's sunglasses are supposed to eradicate the personal by totally wiping out the eye (this is how most identity are removed, "black marker across the eye"), Pilati's YSL sunglasses adds character to the wearer. The nose is given more exposure and the eyes are given more individual shape than the (Margiela's) bare rectangle that crosses the face. While Margiela's woman are more defined by the clothes, YSL's sunglasses attribute to the personal of its wearer in conjunction with the clothes.

Funny enough, I was telling my friend the other day how much I prefer international magazines over American ones. And then I saw this and I must ad, I have to have a clause to that statement now. How overdone is adrogeny? It's over done, especially in the most simplistic state. I get it, dominance. I get it, girl is the man of the relationship. This editorial doesn't accentuate the clothes at all except for its tedium portrayals of woman displaying power via clothes, men-like clothes. *yawn*.

Global warming? What global warming? It's spring and it's layers galore. I love the colors though. It's nostalgic of the early nineties. Aaron Romulo (the model) is so cute too. The pictures make me miss my hair. I wonder what Mel Bles (photographer) was thinking putting guys on top of the roof. Do guys in layers go on the roof and overlook city scapes? Maybe that's why I haven't found any cute dressed and cute guys.

It's editorials like this that reminds me why I love men's fashion. And then I go outside and I realize there's so much dampening of that sense of creativity. Living in Philadelphia really curbs your style. Where this might seem norm in paris or stockholm, it's outlandish among the seas of fake H&M, American Apparel, Urban Outfitters and the Hollister and A&F. I can't wait till I leave this ignorant city. I love the oversized jacket and the loose, yet fitted pants. There's not enough pants here, just gross Diesels.

Killing me Softy with his Burberry & Roen Song

I wonder how many people, when looking at this picture would randomly want the Burberry shirt and pants? Do guitarists really see this picture and go out and purchase over $500 because of a picture they see? Do they really want to emulate it that badly? Granted this isn't an editorial; however, it's a spread so to a certain degree, it's supposed to appeal to the viewer. I guess if I had the income and the exact same house, I would go out and make such purchases, pick up a guitar (even though I don't know how to play) and take a picture to replicate it exactly. But aside from the amusement value, there's also the art value. But aside from the art value, I don't think it really encourages me to go make the purchases.

However, that Roen slipper he has on makes me want to go buy one. Oh who am I kidding? If I had the income I would definitely purchase everything there, only to regret it later since my proportions wouldn't be the same. Even so, how can you go wrong with calves-cut pants and a gold taffeta shirt? You can't.

I'm going to go cut all my jeans/pants now.

Dries Van Noten Pushes my Buttons (in a good way)

Dries Van Noten is hands down one of my favorite men's collection from fall 2008. I love the proportion of the big jackets and oversize silk scarfs. I love the colors of the prints. When I think of Dries Van Noten, I think of an Italian man on the country side in his comfortable state smoking a cig and reading Fernando Pessoa.

I love that picture that the satorialist had of the man at Dries Van Noten:

There's just an ease and prettiness to it. The colors that Noten use also gives it this rich, luscious silk appeal. Dries Van Noten men fall 2008 definitely a favorite!

Well, not really since he's drenched. But seriously, imagine the modern Jesus reawakened with a drenched Rick Owen t-shirt on his head and a necklace like that. Would you not come to listen to the parables? I would.

Don't Dior (Homme)!

When I saw this, I imagined that the guy on the left are the people of Hedi Slimane holding KRIS VAN ASSCHE's arm to tell him to curb his influence because it'll end up questionable, which it did.

Fall 2008? Really? What is it/that? That grip should have been stronger. I saw the same use of buttefly placement on a Spring 2007 men's collection somewhere (I forgot where, but the butterflies were in white). This lack of originality only adds to the annoyance I felt towards Assche. Creativity? Innovation? All I saw were awkward proportionate man who outgrew his boys clothes. There's a different between skinny and barely able to button up comfortably. I told myself perhaps the collection would grow on me, but it hasn't. There's still time...However, Assche's own collection was impressive so I don't get it. For now, it's still Spring and I enjoyed the modern Victorian interpretation in Dior Homme's spring collection than this new venture Assche is exploring.

Lanvin Lovin'

I love Lanvin, I really do. I love Lucas Ossendrijver (designer) too, it's true. The ads are phenomenal but I can't help but wonder what happens when you're not skinny. What happens if you're not Alban Blondiaux (the model)? Will it look just as good when it's not windy? So many questions!

I love the fluidity and the proportions of his pieces. I love the jacket within the jacket; how he's able to make heavy layers into sheer pieces. But I definitely am convinced that if I don't walk fast with at least some wind, the clothes will look droopy on me. So for all those out there where there's wind blowing, put on some Lanvin and walk on the street so the wind can accentuate your figure. If you're fat, I suggest getting something twice your size. Actually, if you're fat I recommend not trying it because you'll probably sweat and the clothes will just stick. I still love you though and so will Ossendrijver.

Recession: Jessica Stam Style

Ever since the fall shows, I haven't had a strong interest in fashion that much. It could be because school's has been keeping me busy or my resurging interest in books, but nonetheless, I can't help but wonder if the current economic conditions and information overload has numb me to the excitement that is fashion.

The fall collections were subdued, as most fall fashion would be, but the palettes colors were a stark contrast than the exhuberant abstract florals of Spring. I could just feel the impact of the economy and its dampening effect. Nonetheless, there were some good ones, which I'll sort out and blog more about later.

What I found interesting was that the men's collection had some exciting pieces than usual. However, with Miu Miu's men collasped since Fall will be its last collection raised a question as to why. I'll also try and blog about that too - young men and their willingness to explore innovative fashion and their income credibility.

Another thing that's been contributing to the monotany of fashion for me is the rapid fashion exposure in the editorials. When I first saw Sasha P. with that Balenciaga two-piece floral volume ensemble, I was thrilled and gazed at the synergized beauty. However, after the 189712315th depiction of it, it grows old. Granted, there are some editorials that reinterpreted and gave some life to something that was dying, the desultory ambience of the Spring collections were withering away. Flowers can't live forever, not even abstract ones.

So when I saw this editorial Demarchelier shot of Stam, I can't help but be amused because it depicts exactly how I currently feel. Stam's sleepy, half-awake eyes, gazing past the lenses aroused this sort of bland outlook towards the future.

Showstudio.com had Tamsin Blanchard write a critque on fashion. The essay turned out to be an analysis of fashion's attempts at responding to the current demands and economy. It's an interesting article and I agree with some. Viktor & Rolf are always one of the most politically voicing house out there. So when they send their models down the show with 3-D "No" across the dress, and dresses with stapples on them, it was clear they did not appreciate the rushing demand and turn-over of the fashion industry.

So many are in a hurry to buy, wear once, and then donate it to their nearest thrift store or sell it on ebay. This is true because of the the progression of the media and communication tools. Internet, PDAs, and quick-services like DSL allows information from fashion shows to reach the audience within hours, some even in minutes. All it takes is to upload it to the web and over tens of millions of people have access to it. This quick access not only makes the consumers screaming for more quicker, but it also increases competition since there's a clear growing trend of stores like Forever21, MACYS, among other imitading the trends as soon as the model walks on runway.

The article also touches on Vivienne Westwood and Issey Miyake, two of whom I didn't care much for. But it's something worth reading.

Why do people that always go against the trends, make trends, and hate monotony always the quickest to accept/create structural thing?

I hate monotony, but I always thinking of new ways to change things. However, when I think about things, I always rationalize and conceptualize them.

Think about Balenciaga, Prada, Marc Jacobs, Gareth Pugh and Alexander Mcqueen. They're all the top houses stirring-up fashion. However, every single one of their collection has something structural to them. (I've linked the names to their latest collection. Swelling Monotony

I was walking down the main shopping street in Philadelphia and I couldn't help but notice the people with the boring, predictable wardrobe. It wasn't until I step into a pseudo-ritzy coffee place in one of the richest part of the city did I notice a more creativity. And the demographic of that group? Women and men over 60. There was a classicism, yet brave look to them. Their clothes reflect their age, but the color splash choices that were either on their cheeks or on their lips made the look beautiful. The jackets sculpted to their body, the fur's grain is vertical and the strut in conjunction with the shoes made Philadelphia worth living in.

Stores like Armani Exchange and Lacoste are overcrowding the already crowding safety-stores. When I say safety, I mean clothes that are bought and put over the head without thinking. When I say safety, I mean clothes that are mimicked by "trend analysts" and made easy by the corporate conglomerate to steal the money of those that want to be "trendy individual." Sadly enough, everyone looks the same with their skinny jeans and beany hat. Their bi-tone techno color American Apparel and Nike air shoes. Gag.

I must congratulate the marketing executives that prey on innocent individuals and understand the weakness of social pressure.

I never understood why people are unable to take at least a half-hour out of their day to dress themselves. I see being able to dress and express myself not to others but to myself one of the great privileges. I understand there's a mindset to why put an effort when you could pay someone to think for you. But that's horrible. I encourage individualism. You can't tell me paying someone in exchange for clothes equates to a certain kind of individualism. There's difficulty understand yourself let alone being depending someone to interpret you.

I find it beautiful the certain way someone ties their scarf, wear their jeans, and tie their trench coat belt. I find it beautiful a certain way someone takes effort to wear a sweater and not intimidated by the size. I find it beautiful a size 0 individual taking a size xxl and wearing it like it was made for her. I'm not saying to not go to Urban Outfitters and American Apparel because all the clothes look the same, which they do. But what I'm saying is be proud of what you wear not just the ability to purchase the clothes, but style it in a way that you could say you own it because you contributed to it. Take pride in tucking in a shirt a different way, or a little off kilter. Play with colors, don't be intimidated and take chances. If someone looks or make comments, don't be upset but enjoy that you put them awkward and out of their comfort zone.

Even if one person does this and decide to tuck in their shirt in a different way than they normally do and do not follow conventions even by an inch. I would be happy.

DARE TO CHANGE! Progression only happens when conventions are questioned and challenged. Be you and be creative. How often can one say, "I am the cause for why they're wearing that." Not often. Be the change. BE THE CHANGE!!!!!! haha. I'll love you for it.

One thing I do to help me be creative is that, before I leave the house I always wonder: If the photographer of the Sartorialist saw me on the street today, will he take a picture of me?

I think I was weary from all the fashion shows that were going on. Information overload. I just wanted to sit down day by night and catch up on the latest shows without feeling obligated to place them into category of trends. (I also have problems with trend analysis people use.) UK Times: Three models banned from fashion show in Madrid for being too thin

“Their health might be OK, but their appearance is extremely thin"
According to UK's Timeonline, three models were banned from Madrid fashion week. I've never really followed Madrid fashion week but I remember they're big on women's rights. Just last year they attacked Dolce & Gabbana ads for advocating women abuse.

But as fashion weeks are here, New York's Fashion week was last week, and this week is London's and Madrid's, followed by Paris and Milan, the issue of model sizes are talked about once again. The New York Times also talks about the higher number of skinny models in NY Fashion Week.

For me, whenever such articles are raised, the media never highlights the models or pictures of the models that are annorexic. That information is always disclosed so the public have to conjured that society taboo image of the worst case scenario ever. You know, the image where the girl's rib cage and piercing through her chest, sunken stomach, big bug eyes, basically a skeleton.

I do have a problem with promoting annorexic where the individual is clearly sick and his or her health are in danger. But to a certain degree, I don't think the media understands that there's a shift in style and culture interest in the fashion industry. What culture is that? The underground, young, glamour culture. In a world where obesity can be considered an epidemic, those who stay young and fit are those that work hard for it. Fat is no longer incorporated with health, but a stepping stone to obesity (insert worst case scenario of an obese individual). You know, the man that sit on his couch, whose skin is grafted with the couch because he hasn't moved in ages.

I digress. This new culture doesn't suppport annorexia. The young skinny boys do not intentionally starve themselves to obtain this physique. Guys and girls are more health concious and they do not want the threat of heart attacks and respiratory problems to shorten their lives. I don't know about you, but I've scene models eat and they do not hold back. The only time where their eating habits are more controlled are during fashion week and that's only because they go in for fitting. Once that fitting occurs, the models have to make sure the fitting do not fluctuate since that will take extra time to fit during the fashion shows; time that the designers and house do not have.

The girls are just build differently. As much as people know over weight people, there's average people, and then there's those that are naturally thin. The fashion industry just has a new muse, a new group of individual's whose bank account are willing to spend on clothes that are tailored and form-fitting, not stretchables.

I'm not disagreeing with the articles, I just think when such an article is so one-sided, it's important to expose all aspects of it instead of just attacking an industry that problem dresses the writer in his Armani suits.

Marc Jacobs Probe, and not the good kind

WWD.com is reporting, "Marc Jacobs International is caught up in a bribery scandal involving its favorite show space, the 69th Regiment Armory — and is the subject of a criminal investigation as a result."

WWD then continues and says, "The former superintendent of Manhattan's 69th Regiment Armory, James Jackson, has been indicted on charges of demanding more than $30,000 to allow the space to be used by the designer and for other events. Marc Jacobs International allegedly made payoffs to Jackson through the designer's public relations firm, KCD Public Relations, to reserve the national historic landmark on key dates, New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo said at a press conference Wednesday."

WHOA! I'm studying business ethics right now and it's up my alley. Though this case may seem harmless, it shows the subjective AND objective regulations in business transactions. Marc Jacobs is cooperating with the investigators, however, the house itself may be under questioning.

Marc Jacobs sure always deliver a headline, whether it is through his exhibition, clothes, or scandals. This my friend is what they mean by there's no such thing as bad publicity, not that he needed anymore.

I normally am intimidated of prints because they're too loud for me, even though I do enjoy bright colors. But big pieces of prints are...something I'm not used to. I'll probably change my mind after my first fur coat. But until then, I'll settle for something more subtle. I like this print because the colors aren't so loud. It's a little milky. I like that the scarf has a vintage feel for it. Also, it's affordable since it's only 139.62 USD.

Halston Women Fall/Winter 2008: All Flop and No Flip

"Halston didn't provide the big bang many in the fahsion industry were yearning for. Zanini didn't even give a bang. Many were left feeling as though it was just another fashion show on the schedule. After I blogged yesterday, even with his statement that he recognizes that archives can prove to be dangerous, he fell into the hole he thought he recognized and tried to stay clear from. The pieces paid homage to Halston but did nothing more. It was like Gianfranco Ferre's Spring collection that his in-house designers did after his death.

The collection was bare minimalism, perhaps too minimalistic. The color didn't excite the viewers but just reminded the people of the weather outside, drabby and stale. The fluidity were like a wilting flower instead of lively like that of Lanvin Spring 2008. Some of the pieces seemed to swallow the models instead of the models commanding the clothes.

Even with certain pieces that were clear Halston, like the long soft skirts, but there was nothing that screams Zanini and his influence. Perhaps working with Versace for so many years as Versace's first designer, he's underestimated the clients' willingness to let him take the reigns however he wish.

With this in mind, more pressure is on Alessandra Faccinetti and what she's going to do with the house of Valentino.

Super Tuesday not Super Fashion

I think that's the closest Hillary has come to a dress. I think when Hillary was born, her mother had a tailor on hand to make her daughter a suit.

Suzy Menkes of the International Herald Tribune wrote an article on the progression of women in offices and how that affects, or might possibly so, dictates women's fashion in America. Women globally, more particularly in the US are obtaining high office jobs and becoming equals to their counterparts.

Menkes interestingly touches on how the election is overshadowing Marc Jacob's slow to being the last show for New York Fashion week and the most-anticipated revival of the house of Halston, which was mediocre.

The women are in the office and they want to be taken seriously. Tradition says that women must be formal, wear feminate suits. However, in recent trends there are houses like Zegna that are offering tailored suits to women. Similarly, there has been a noticeable increase in suit jackets in women's collection. Ironically, the pants are no where in sight, but high skirts are. Menkes touches on the clear move of designers being concious of this movement.

I, however, am conflicted. Tradition may require women to be taken seriously but is a suit required? I would love to see someone confidently enter a room in a dress, or something less feminate and structured, unless in the Balenciaga-structured sense. I think women have advanced and evolved enough to command a sense of respect without immitating men. I am not against suits, but there's no need to be drab and monotone. Instead of an androgynous suit why not put on something that's more decorated like a Chanel Tweed jacket, a colorful skirt, or a Lanvin blooming blouse?

Oftentimes people like to stay in their comfort zone but I live by the Foucault believe that in order for progression to take place, one has to jump into the unknown. One can't grow if one's static and content. Perhaps it's my ADD that makes me bored of a situation often instantly, and constantly yearning for changes. I don't think the time for women to "prove" themselves are still a struggling movement. With that, I don't think women should compromise themselves and their beauty. There's nothing wrong with a little color and fluff in a sea of dark blue and pin-striped suits.

Halston '08: Revival or Denial?

Halston was one of the most acclaimed designers of the 70s. A favorite of movie stars, socialites, the general public, and a favorite at studio54. His design were chic minimalism. The clothes were simple and elegant.

After a few years dormant, and six designers later, a known media investor, a media-famed stylist come together to revive the brand. Will they succeed? All eyes are on the Fall/Winter 2008 show tonight.

Marco Zanini is the sixth designer to try and accomplish what five other couldn't do. What's different this time? The world of celebrities are back with the media influence stronger than ever. Who else could contribute to make a hopeful team? Rachel Zoe, celebrity stylist known for her anorexic, mannequin-like celebrities coterie. She's been known to drench her clients in Halston so many could see why she's on the board in revitalizing the brand. To complete the team, Harvey Weinstein stepped on board. With his wife, Georgina Chapman, a designer of Marchesa, Harvey is not newcomer to the fashion industry. He hopes this investment will rival that of Tom Ford at Gucci.

As iconic as the house of Halston and the nostalgia of style past, I'm not sure this team will be able to pull it off in an ultra-fresh manner that is expected of it. However, if Zanini is able to present a collection that touches on the simplistic elegance of Halston, that will be interesting. Calvin Klein have been one of the few American designer that is known for that so to see if Halston is able to come afloat and establish their trademark and make it modern, it will definately have a strong market. In the article Zanini recognized that the archive of Halston, though great, can be of a hindrance. Since he recognizes that, it is hopeful that perhaps he will be the one to be able to accomplish what other were'nt able to do. Besides, with Rachel Zoe and Weinstein on board, it's already looking more promising than past attempts.

WWD'S The Storm Is Coming Pictures

Women's Wear Daily captured these fun pictures of designers as they're preparing for New York Fashion Week for Fall/Winter 2008. There's over 26 pictures designers trying clothes on models, making phone calls, putting finishing touches on their pieces, etc. The three I've posted are examples of some of the pictures available. It's cute - some of the pictures. I posted the link at the bottom so you can go browse through some of the pictures. You don't have to be a member to view the pictures because I was able to see the pictures without logging into my account.

Zac Posen is so cute and he seems so personable. He's also a great constructionist. No wonder's he's a favorite among many New York Socialites. He always dress well too.

Oscar de la Renta constructed 62 looks, over 100 pieces for his pre-fall 2008 collection. Imagine how serious he took his pre-fall collection. I'm curious as to what his fall 2008 collection is going to be. Is there going to be over 500 pieces? Probably not. But still. That man is really dedicated and to churn out over 60 pieces a collection, let alone a sub-collection since it's not the main one is pretty amazing. The ideas that he have...My friend, Nik, said that imagination is based on how much you know so that you could reference them. So the more imagination you have, the more creative ideas you would have. Oscar De La Renta clearly has that experience that will allow him to keep turning out amazing clothes till...he retires, assuming that he will. He probably has an archive so that after he retires the house could function for another century. Hah.

As for Tommy Hilfiger, this is his third seasonal comeback so everyone is still seeing if it really will be a comeback. The past two seasons were totally Hilfiger through the colors, that sub-muted pastel colors that's American. Judging on what he's holding up, he'll still provide that conservative, Savannah porch, "American-Pride" color lines style that the designer is known for.

How fun does those shoes look? The shoes gives this holographic look, which is definately futuristic if you as me in regards to concept. I love the colors and the black linings. I'm normally not a fan of high-tops, at least not since high school, but I haven't wanted a high-top like these since...well, high school. I can picture it looking great with a park of dark blue jeans, or anything. I love that it has this sky-blue, cloud effect going on. The colors also changes with each movement so yeah. I don't know how else to praise this except I want it; I need it now. Except it's on sale and there's no longer my size. But if you are a size 6 or 7, UK Standard, I recommend getting these.

With Lanvin Spring 2008 having great praise for the grecian, flightly and airy collection last season that everyone adored, and also praised by many buyers of chain stores, be sure to keep a look out to who will piggy-back ride to boost some profits.
Deux.
For Balenciaga Spring 2008, Nicholas Ghesquiere, designer, raised the bar and shone the light on structure. There's definatley a push towards what is new, what is the future. It's interesting to see the insights that will either support Ghesquiere's outlook or inject the market with a new "ooh la la."
Trois.
Spring was flower power raised to the max, or in mathematical connotation, flower^infinity. However, it wasn't just regular flowers but more artistic inspired flower prints. They were suggestive but the petals weren't defined. Will the "flower prints" be carried over to fall?
Quatre.
Spring of art-inspired things, a big trend for Spring 2008 was paint-splattered textiles like the dresses from Dolce & Gabbana 2008.

Basically, keep a look out for those who will mimic the top houses' designs and construction in the spring, and keep a look out for the innovative new leaders. There's been a huge injection of new talents and reincarnation of houses, like Bill Blass. There's also new designers taking over notorious houses, like Valentino and its new artistic creator Alessandra Facchinetti. Fall is definately a season of changes, big changes. There's a lot of things going on in regard to changes not within the fashion industry but in the economy. I'll be sure to highlight what I see the best I can. Stay tune and do look out for huge changes!!

Rachel Roy Women Fall/Winter 2008

I love the color that she's using. It's rusting iron mixed with a touch of metallics, almost referencing one of those saturated orange tomato. The girls are so chic with the high waist pinch and I love the jacket in the second look with the bottom two buttons. I also love the skirt in the fifth look - the skirt will go well with almost everything. Feather played a big role in last season with McQueen, Proenza Schouler, among other collections and it seems like Roy is playing with it as accessories. I like the exoticness that the feathers and colors conjure. I could see this editorial where the girls are standing on a vocanol with a stream of lava going down while the girls are just nonchalantly putting on their make-up. A less extreme situation would be seeing these clothes at gallery openings. The clothes are definitely an upper-east side classic, conservative, but fun favorite.

Vera Wang Lavender Label Women Fall/Winter 2008

So I knew there's a pseudo-recession going on but I didn't it was that depressing. Just kidding. Vera introduced her more affordable brand, lavendar Label, and it really cute. The mood is confidence but glamour. Young but not intimidated by fur. The colors are a little muted but the girls are modern in subtle ways - mainly the construction. The skirt in the first picture has a subtle volume to it, pinched a little at the top but it doesn't close in like recent structures for skirts. It's almost structured and geometric but not necessarily, but there's definitely a directness to them.

I love that jacket wit hthe fur short sleeve. Shoulders need to be kept warm too. This collection is supposed to be affordable and if it is, for that jacket to look the way it is, you'll sure fool people on your income. What's great about this collection is that though it is not Vera Wang's name, the label still has a rich feel to it. Especially some use of pearls in the collection. That look in the last one doesn't scream petty shopper, or kmart lovers. It's a woman that's going to an art gallery followed by a semi-formal dinner. I just like it when a designer understands that those with a less disposable income also wants to wear their name.

Only question is does genuine matter? Does Vera really care for those with lesser income but wants her clothes or she's recognizing the trend in the economy and wants to provide a collection that's more affordable so people aren't scared in spending? I say I want that fur-short sleeved jacket. Because when it comes to fashion, if something looks and feel good and looks good on you, buy it no matter what the price. Though of course, don't refinance your house for it, unless it's a Dior Couture gown from the 50s.

Elie Tahari Women Fall/Winter 2008

I just wrote an entry on how women's suit and more formal dressing, aka business woman will be a dominant archetype for Fall 2008. It's flair leg is also making a comeback. It was seen on Katie Holmes, Victoria Beckham, both of whom aren't exactly fashion gurus, but influencers in the past six months. I like them because they elongate the legs, especially when added with a cropped jacket like the last woman is wearing. Whenever a sleeved is shorter than the wrist, it elongates the torso because it gives it the illusion of someone who out-grew their clothes, but not in a bad way! Also, I love how the jacket on the last girl is structured with that pattern. I wonder what matterial it's made out of or it was just super starched.

Either way, what is this woman portraying? My husband is in a hedge fund and I'm going to support him because by dressing like this, I demand a serious attitude. However, I'm hungry and I want to go have lunch with my girlfriends to show off my new jacket.

Boy by Band of Outsiders Women Fall/Winter 2008

I love this collection, all 12 wardrobes of it. It's nothing new. It's grunge, dark, hip new-york girl. The nude camel- color introduced or injected by miuccia prada two seasons ago - is becoming popular, as you can see in the jacket(2). Bands of Outsiders are an up and coming favorite for people, so it's interesting that such a young brand has already stretched themselves through a sub-brand, Boy.

The name says it. The polos, the jackets, all androgynous but with that "hipster" feel. It's as though they're all going to a concert or some basement party. What gave it that feel? The plaid patterns and the sock gloves. Overall there's nothing new but the presentation touches on the trend right now so it's definately markeatble and will sell.

Also, notice the shoes. They're so cute! Tuxedo shoes. I think they're heels. They bring that casual formality that makes things understated, but is a necessary touch.

NYT: The Newly Uptight

“I like the idea of good tailoring and clothes that are not so demonstrative,” she said. “We’re getting beyond the idea of ‘look at me, look at me.’ Fashion today is more about calmness than flash.”

The New York Times had a great article on the trend of fall 2008. The trends are gearing towards conservatism - less mini skirt, less babydoll shirts and dress, less "loud" ladies. Conservatism, however, will not be so subdued but subtle, passive chic. The quote above accentuates the desire of the fashion world to be a little more serious. With an interst in economics, I can't help but wonder whether the designers are reflecting present economic worries.

I wrote a memo in one of my class on how a company was weakening and had to restructure themselves and they thought the first thing to do is to change the office wardrobe. The company used to have formal dressing but then relaxed the rule and casual wear was accepted, a progression towards casual Friday. In recent blogs, I always touch on how I dress reflects how I think, or at least have influence on how I feel and act the specific time I have that wardrobe on.

With that in mind, perhaps for fall everyone is getting ready to sit down and be serious on tackling the unsteady world economy. In American society, there's a shift in presidency and awaiting the new one to undo and help the society regain momentum. When the people elected Bush, people said that they wanted a president to sit down and have a drink with. However, perhaps after seeing what that type of person can do, a president should be expected of more than a drinking buddy.

Though the article touches on the movement back to conservatism, the culture has always existed. I also admire the culture that stands out but try little in doing so. They don't need a bright neon skirt, though there's nothing wrong with it, but a tweed jacket and a fitted suit fits them just as fine as a Marc Jacobs inverse-underwear Spring 2008 dress.

Designers seem intent on returning to old-fashioned civilities just the same. Some view the resurrection of a more formally controlled aesthetic as a rebuke to young Hollywood’s disheveled style. Thakoon Panichgul, who will show a collection of body-skimming dresses with subtle ’60s details, maintains that such looks are timely. “There is an energy about being proper,” he said. “It’s not about wholesomeness, it’s about respectability, about having manners again.”

I have to go to class, but I think the article is really interesting and worth reading. Besides, I'm tired of the mini skirts and the babydoll dresses. :)

Marketing: Price=supply(name) + demand

For the past few months I've been interested on pricing. No one loves a good bargain like Tyra Banks. But second in command, and less cheap, that's me. If I could find a good price on something, doesn't have to be on sale, I'll purchase it. Last year was the first year I've invested on shoes and jeans over $300 dollars each.

So at first I was interested in store pricing but then as I was riding the subway today in conjunction with the online purchases I've been making the past few months, I became interested in online purchasing.

What I know about store pricing like Bergdorf, Neimans and other luxury stores is that they have a mark-up of more than 50% on the product. How else do you think they're able to have those great sales and not really worry about losses? The thing about luxury stores is that you can't really walk from store to store and compare prices and then decide on which one you want. Well you can if you are really in shape and not the average American. However, you are probably asking such sites have online stores now. You're right.

So I'm a huge online shopper because I live in Philadelphia and there's no stores that carry the brands that I like within walking/public transportation distance. The closest would probably be King of Prussia which has Neimans, Versace, etc. The closest thing to luxury in Philadelphia is Boyds for both men and women (carrying brands like Zegna, Armani, D&G, etc) and other local boutiques for women like Echo Chic on Sansom and Joan Shepp on Walnut Street. My point is that these local physical stores have a niche in Philadelphia so they're able to have a greater mark-up. For people who like good, quality, luxury items but aren't tech savy, the price that's presented are higher than the internet prices.

But for people who constantly window shop and online browse, I'm concious of the price difference. Though they're 100-500 difference, after a few items it all adds up. Especially since I'm a college student.

To recap, online stores most likely cost less than the local boutiques of pseudo-cities where the general population are a little older and money isn't an issue.

Online stores are for a younger generation that are brand-concious but with a limited income, or at least I'm talking about me. So I was wondering if there are millions of me out there, how do these store price themselves as competitors. They're limited amount of clothes in high-fashion that comes out each season so how do they price themselves so that customers are willing to go to their site instead of the competitors? The answer:

NAMING of PRODUCTS

Let's assume I want a pair of Dior Homme Jeans. Each season, the house releases a limited amount of jeans and then buyers from stores and online stores come and request the list of inventory they think will sell. Let's assume the online stores are, some are my favorites, Saks, Bergdorf, Neimans, Bloomingdales, LuisaViaRoma, Pret-a-porter, Diabro, bluefly, and eluxury. Let's say there's one pair of Dior Homme jeans that all the stores carry. So as an avid shopper, I notice these pairs of jeans and I want them a lot, however, the only way I would purchase them is knowing I have the best price out there. What do I have to factor in? The cost of the product and shipping and handling.

So how does one go about making sure one has the best price on the jeans? Well, I would go from site to site to look for them or do a search with the name of the jeans or the description.

Easy enough right? Wrong.

The sites will turn out to each have different price ranges but you can't really tell the difference if they're the same pair of jeans because the name for it is different. On one site it could be called, Dark Blue Jeans, and another could say Spring/Summer 2008 Jeans, and another could say Spring/Summer 2008 Raw, Whiskered Jeans, etc. Not only the name is different, but how they're presented is different as well. It could be different models wearing it, different lighting. So before you know it you're presented with jeans that looks different and it seems to have over five different kinds but in reality, they may just be the same pair.

This is how the online stores are able to get around price comparisons. The make the supply low and the demand high so they could put the price on it. It seems like that online store you're looking at is the only one carrying that type of jeans and you could get it no where else so the average consumer, not knowing this, would make that purchase.

How clever right? I'm really intrigued by pricing and that's what I thought about on my day to school today on the train. Hope that give you some insight into being more careful when making a purchase online.

I Need a Good Suit

So this Christmas I basically spend over $2000 to update my wardrobe and that's just for 5 pieces. I'm in my third year of college, with hope of graduating next year May 2009 with a good job once I get out. How can I ensure both graduating and landing a good job? The equation is easy. Or at least the partial equation is:

Look Good=Feel Good=Outstanding Performance
DUH! It's easy, Right? Not so much, especially looking good is proportionate to how well one performs. And looking good, one has to be willing to spend some money. How you chose to spend it, is up to you. But I recommend don't be frugal if you don't have to be. Looking slouchy and like the clothes were from your father's closet will make you feel exactly that, outdated or like an italian guido. Unless you work in the mafia, please refrain. However, I'm optimistic in believing that mafias out there have been upgraded to Jil Sanders and Versace suits.

I prefer not to look like my father or in a Mafia unless your father is 30, an investment banker or trader for Prada, Jil Sander, Dior Homme, or Armani. Just kidding. There's also Valentino and Versace. I'm not saying for you to live off of Ramen Noodles for the next year just so you could have a nice fitted suit ang some Ferragamo shoes, I'm asking that you would be smart, know your audience and dress appropriately.

If you plan on working corporate, dress formal. I suggest Jos A. Bank. They will help educate you on what to wear. After learning how many breaks you are supposed to have in your pants, then move on to Bergdorf. Or you can take smaller steps and go to Macys before upgrading to Brooks Brother. If you plan on working in marketing at Vogue, step it up further and wear Thom Browne or one of Anna Wintour's favorite asian loves. But I'm sure if marketing department at Vogue is your goal, I'm sure you're fashion concious and know how to dress appropriately for Wintour.

I digress. I need a good suit. I haven't invest in a suit since...I have no idea. Mother use to buy suits for me back in high school and I dreaded wearing them. They would not fit me well and I turned out looking like my dad, which is understandable because to her, that's her ideal man.

My ideal man? Terron Woods in any of the wardrobe above. Or any of the men in the pictures. The cuts are tailored, falls on the body and hugs it just right and nothing is too extreme, screaming clean, but not stuffy and impersonal. Of course I don't have that all-american look like Terron Woods does, not yet at least; however, it's good to be concious of the proportion. Where the jacket should fall, how the sleeves fall, how the collar is not crunched or crimped or cramped, where the legs end. All that is important. But since I'm anal and insecure, I alway like something that fall where it should be so I tend to get most of my pants tailored. I'm 5'7 so unless I plan on getting a suit cut by Raf or Albert Elbaz themselves, I have invested in a tailor I trust. I like her not only for her skills but because she gives me gum.

For me, it's important to look clean and crisp. It's important for what I wear to not be dull - I always need a pop of color somewhere. Whether it is through my sweater sleeve, my button up shirt, my socks, my belt, watch, or whatever single piece there is that makes the piece me. Or, dare I say, a brooch. Yes, I said a brooch, some pieces can be worn by men. MEN not boys. Well, I guess that could be argued both ways depending on your age.

What I like about the pictures above is that it is stylized but subtle. There's no pop of color, but a pop through cut and through turtlenecks or pashmina, helping emphasize the head and body. Such pieces helps make the look seem casual but still retaining that formality that most job will require.

When I was little, I hated feeling stuffy because I noticed all the grown up around me looked (I didn't live in New York, Paris or Milan) boring and I didn't like how the men look. But with the styling presented in the pictures above, I could have a better appreciation for a good suit, a better understanding of my own style. I like that it's clean and looks effortless so it's not a choir to get dressed up anymore. The suits are not so much an obligation, but something I actually want to put on and flaunt. The suits or the accesories with it, though monotone, became that pop that I look for, but without color.

I've made it a goal to dress with jeans less this year and foward because I think dressing affects how I act or think that day. Jeans is an American influence and as much as it's a globalized trend now, if one goes abroad people can be seen to wear pants than jeans. Though that is questionable since the jeans market have been increasing, especially since Chanel Spring 2008 just had a collection where the fabrics were jeans. Though that is the case, pants and slack gives a sense of casual elegance that many still favor. I'm more conservative in dressing so I'm bias and prefered that look more. Also, I want to be more serious in my studies and what I'm pursueing so I noticed that by waking up, no matter how crappy I feel, if I wear a jacket with slacks, I feel better in the day than going out in something wrinkled and gross.

Standing out of the crowd of slack, skinny jeans, and urban outfitters brand tees, I feel more individualized and that gives me confidence. In the long run, I know that if I get used to this new mode of dressing, I'll be a more productive person. I'm not saying I'll dress up in a suit everyday, but a little bit more conservative. With Prada's latest collection, along with Lanvin and Gucci, dressing formal isn't dressing like your dad anymore. So to be productive and feeling better, I don't necessarily need to invest in an Armani or Valentino suit, I could scale down and recognize the contemporary pieces and see if other affordable brands out there are imitating the cuts, or just get the pieces made by some local tailor.

I've never been more excited to invest in/wear a suit. I've never been more excited to have recuitors look at the fit and proportions of my suit and my individualized style among the stuffy Men's Wearhouse drab, which works for some people but not for me. I'm confident in my look. Though confidence alone may not get me a job, my confidence through my wardrobe will get me noticed and will allow me to present myself in a manner many would want to invest in since I have heavily invested in presenting myself for the job, $1000+ worth. Hah.

Frankie Morello Spring/Summer 2008

So, now that I have your attention after seeing those pictures, I want to talk about the brand. I'm sure you rather me just repost the pictures so you could look at them again, but just bare with me for tidbit and you could go back to enlarging the picture and then making it your desktop background, or whatever you do with such pictures...

Those pictures above are from Frankie Morello's lookbook for Spring/Summer 2008, modeled by Terron Wood, my current favorite male model. Frankie Morello is a men and women's wear company, with a more stronger focus in women's wear. It's one of my favorite designers for ready-to-wear. Three are two designers to the name and they're based in Milan. One doesn't normally find this brand on style.com because...Well, frankly I can't speak about style.com since I do not work for them or know how they function. Perhaps they didn't get invited, which I doubt bcause Elle.com has access to their fashion show. Perhaps there were five other shows going at once and they didn't have someone on staff to attend to the show, which I also doubt because, com'on, It's style.com, collaborators with vogue, and W. So as to the reason why you won't be able to find Frankie Morello on Style.com? I have no idea. But a reason why you won't find them there may be becuase someone at Style.com doesn't think it's one of the big names or influencers in present-day fashion market, along with Cacharel, a brand I also love. Basically, they're, in my opinion, underrated, along with Cacharel, whose collection could also be found on Elle.com . ANYWHO. (Frankie Morello @ Elle.com)

So Frankie Morello is a brand that's super cute and chic. Have you heard of Dsquared2? Well, I prefer Frankie Morello over Dsquared2. Why? Because the cut are so much more contemplated than an evolved Diesel collection. As much as I love the twins of Dsquared2, Dean and Dan, their collection sometimes can be dry; however, I think what helps them is that it's hip and the colors are what people are going for presently. Frankie Morello, however, is more innovative. It's more cute and personal, less pretentious feeling than their competitors. Their website (Frankie Morello ) is cute and fun to navigate. What I like about companies based abroad is that it is less subtle in going after profit. Even Frankie Morello's about me on their website is told through a comic strip. I love the colors, it's new. It's not following that saturated trend. The only thing I could really point out that they're following trends on is that Amy Winehouse affect that Karl just went through for Chanel Pre-Fall in London. But aside from that, it's refreshing to see a collection that's fun and weareable, and not trying so hard.

Like Cacharel, Frankie Morello is going to get more face time in the future. I just feel it. Perhaps I may be bias because they're currently using Terron Wood for their lookbook. However, I have pieces by them and the cut fits well. By fitting well, I mean it accentuates the ass. Frankie Morello is also currently my friend's favorite, who's currently interning in Milan. She also met them and said the men are lovely. The brand is just fun and they don't make any facades about it. Other brands that had jumpsuits in their collection didn't seem fun for me. I didn't see a reason to buy them. With Frankie Morello, the colors, the patches that they incorporated into it points out that it's meant to be fun, like a union suit. And I like that, honesty in their presentation.

Jil Sander Long Tulle Overlay Top

This entry is about the piece of tulle floating around the body, not the shirt or pants.

When I first saw this collection, I was enamored with it. I love the simplicity of the fold and fabric. The collection was so post-modern ethereal. It was like an injection of architecture's international style, but with colors.

It never occured to me how I'm supposed to wear it. Ok. I could wear it. It never occured to me how I'm supposed to wear it in public, in Philadelphia at least. Philadelphia is still conservative style wise. The store that I found to be selling this stuff is not and will not be Barneys, Neiman Marcus, or Bergdorf, it was Luisa Via Roma, an Italian store. I could see this being a shot covered by the Satorialist for Milan because it's tres chic. But in the US? Not so much. The only place that you wouldn't get a weird look? Possibly New york, which is where I plan to move to after I graduate.

Another place you could wear it? Third world country notorious for mosquitos. It's perfect as a body mosquito net! Maybe Raf Simons is trying to attract and encourage third world country to take care of their body more, but in style! The only reason I'm hesistant in saying that was his goal was because of two reasons. Most people in the third world country exposed to such pest, by pest I mean tourists, would be intimidated if third world country started dressing better than them! He cares about third world country and he doesn't want the natives to scare people away. A secondary reason would be the price. Most third world country can't really afford a 470euro mosquito net with bidye. You know? I mean if I was in the third world, I would starve myself for half the year just so I could buy the dye and then find a fish net and attempt to make myself this exact replica. But that's just me. SO those two reasons are why I don't think Raf Simons were trying to appeal to the third world, however, I would prefer it was more affordable because I don't mind seeing pictures of people wearing these in National Geographic. Perhaps someone should start a program of aid in purchasing these Jil Sander Long Tulle for third world countries.

But anyway, If I was in New York or abroad in Europe with the finance I need, I would make this purchase in a heartbeat. By the way, the shirt on the inside and the orange pant stockings are not part of the deal. It's just the overlay top.

Bangin' Bangle? : Marni

I really like this bangle. It reminds me of third grade when I used to play with PlayDoh before it became really complicated. You know, before you could start sculpting the whole human genome project with them along with hydrogen polypeptides. Either way, the colors are totally in, that candy look. It's like you could be one of the cool druggied up kids on hallucinagens but without the drugs to see the colors.

Put in your image a clear day in central park (it HAS to be central park) and you're walking from the East side to the West side to meet with your less affluent friends for lunch in your bright yellow phillip lim mini skirt and Lanvin white blouse (which I've mentioned before in my previous post) wearing this bangle. The colors just pop out of your hand. And you know what? The beads may actually pop out of your hand, because if you enlarge the picture it's actually stringed together by a hair rubber band. I'm kidding. It's probably stringed together by something probably a little bit more stronger than that.

But word of advice, this bangle is only meant to be looked at from a distance because if you look close you kind of see the sewn fabric wrapped around something. As much as I'm sure Marni wanted to be avant-garde in juxtaposing plastic against cotton to show that they believe in the assimilation of nature and artificial creations, the twenty children that died to make this think otherwise. I'M KIDDING! You think kids have sewing skills?? It's 80+ year old italian women with their skin barely hanging onto the bones that make these. Actually, I don't know. But isn't it weird that we're ok with elder on respirators working but not ok with child labor? I mean, they're basically the same thing. I think they should let kids eat.

Back to the point, I love this bangle, it look and works great with a spring/summer wardrobe since Spring 2008 is all about colors. Spring is always about colors but you know, since VOGUE and W are accentuating it this year, it must mean it is REALLY about color.

You could purchase this bangle for a measly 375.45USD. If you make less than 20,000 a year, I suggest you go to you local Arts and Craft store and ask your little girl, or your grandparents (the key part to have is adept, thin figers) to help you try to imitate this lovely bangle.

Jessica Stam & Luke Worrall shot by Steven Klein is following the trend of paint and color splashing. I think this is my favorite so far because it's such a beautiful editorial. I also love Vmagazine for incorporating men and womenswear, blurring the line and further encouraging androgyny. Clothes can be sexless, it's the social impositions that differentiate what is and isn't, what's male and female. Although I'm not that avant garde in wearing dresses and printed gowns, I still think Luke Warrall is beautiful in the pictures and clothes.

Anne Valérie Hash Couture Spring 2008: Still Young, Still Nude

Well if you know me, you know I Love illusory things. I love the first look, followed by the detailed look and how one is so different than the other. What's even amazing about this collection is that at first sight, it doesn't seem as though the pieces are see-through, but they are. It's this irony that I adore Anne Valérie Hash. I love that the clothes are see through but from a distant they're not. From a distance the clothes look simple, basic, but at a closer look it is engulfed with details and masterful fabric manipulation. Her concepts and construction, especially the geometric folds are just so masterful, supporting her credentials as a couturier.

Porcelain is in, the skin color that is

If you're like me, you're probably over the tan crazed faze. Unless you're Argentenian or Brazilian or along the border of the equator, you should not look like you've been colored on with a light brown magic Crayola marker.

I even think Giorgio Armani and Valentino is over the crazed faze. Versace's skin is even showing sign of life instead of cracked clay. Even so, it doesn't mean I want them to have pale, vampire skin, which is totally in right now(vampire that is). However, their tan is more natural. Versace, Valentino and Armani do no get into their Bentley and go to Hollywood or Beverly Hill tan, they tan on their yachts. Like my friend's friend said,"Tanning on a boat is different than tanning in a bed with heated lights because of the reflection of the water." So unless you tan on a floaty in your swimming pool, please run to your nearest CVS and purchase the most porcelain foundation and concealer, white-out if you're dramatic and apply it all over your face and any skin that shows.

I'm kidding. But seriously, pale isn't back, but porcelain skin is. Since exclusivity is making a comeback and that's where high fashion is moving towards now, back to their roots, exclusive ideas of upper class are also coming back.

Tan used to be associated with those who work the fields, the outside, the help, the farmers, those with low income. Those with a lighter skin tone means you're able to enjoy lounging about in your home. This then changed when royalties started vacationing on the Mediterraneans. The tone of the tan was different; it was less dark that those that work outside. Tanning then became a status symbol of luxury because it meant you could vacation.

The idea of tan has now shifted again. If you go to the east, you could ask any asian culture and they will tell you that lighter skin is preferred to darker skin. That is if you ask someone that is older than 35. With the current shift in culture focus, from the west to the east, and the movement back to exclusivity and class, and Dita Von Teese(hah), lighter skin is now in the mode.

So, thought I share that little history with you and tell you to stop fake tanning because you'll just be out of trend, which is worst than getting cancer, which you also have a high chance of if you artificially tan, or tan for real. Basically stop tanning. Thanks.

Cat-Power (not the singer)

John Galliano for Christian Dior and Christian Lacroix played with Cavalli's prints for their couture collection, only one piece each though. I love Dior's leopard prints and how it looks on the Dior volume dress. Even down to the shoes reference claws and her bright eyebrows highlights fierceness. Dior's Savannah cat is not one to be messed with, just worn. Hah!

Lacroix's cat is product of a zoo whose kept their animals together one day since the cages were being clean. The cheetah prints, the zebra shoes. It's less elegant than Dior but more playful. I don't know which one to prefer but if I had to choose I think I would go with Lacroix since it just seems younger for me. When I'm 25 and decide to have a sex change for something and can afford a couture gown, I'll opt for the Dior.

Give in to Givenchy Couture Spring 2008

When I hear Givenchy, I think of dark elegance with structure, but presented in a light way. Does that make sense? With that in mind, that's exactly what Riccardo Tisci gave for his Givenchy Couture Spring 2008 collection. The clothes were tailored and the wearer unintimidated. I picture L'wren Scott, fashion stylist, strutting about in them with her lean figure as though she's ready to stomp on anyone that dare gives her a dirty look. It's like a Karl Lagerfeld with a bitchy, wrinkle-free face in 6" heels.

Ok, that may be a bad image but that's what comes to mind for me. As fearless as the clothes make the wearer, it's presented in a romantic soft way. Tisci said the collection was very much a "dark ballerina," which is clear in the plume of folds and wind-tossed feathers. The third outfit in the picture above reminds me of Doo.Ri's notorious signature tight-wrapping and folding.

Christian Lacroix Couture=Valentino+Nina Ricci

Perhaps Christian Lacroix is paying homage to his retiring comrade. Valentino Couture show is set for today and everyone and their mistress is waiting for it. It's his last one. But I digress. I love this beautiful red dress from Lacroix Couture Spring 2008. I love that it closes in at the leg instead of trailing behind or touching the ground. It gives it an ethereal appeal. I said Valentino because there's that sensuality to it along with that Valentino red. And I said Nina Ricci because of the structured draping and ruffles like what Olivier Theyskens (Nina Ricci's current designer) did for Fall 2007. The structure of the dress also reference Galliano's dark romanticism of his Fall 2007 collection. I guess this dress could represent a mutated, but beautiful child of a threesome.

She sells seashell in her Chanel

When Karl Lagerfeld went vacationing in Saint Tropez, after prancing about with his neck high, hands joined with Brad, he stumbled on some little girl collecting seashells and he thought, my little princcipessa (princess in Italian), you've inspired me for my couture show. And that's what brought about Chanel Couture SPring 2008. The folds and accesories screamed shells. Chanel was a clam, and the clothes were its pearls. The structure was stiff like the ridges of a shell, and I would like to think Karl is trying to tell me, or us, that there's life under the sea, which in this case means the east. Haha. Mini skirts makes the Japanese school girls scream, along with the flats making Amy Winehouse scream along with every American who love flats.

Now say it with me as quickly as you can for at least six consecutive time: She sells seashell in her Chanel.

So unless you have a wooping $500+ to dish out on a hair band, you better run to your nearest seashore or online seastore and start collecting those shells and strand them. I'm sure yours won't be as good and well made as Chanel's but, you'll be "ahead" of the trend. (Side note: extra brownie points for whomever brave enough integrate a conch into their brooch, headband, and/or whatever.)

Do I even need to say anything? The colors are amazing. The way the dresses are depicted are amazing. It's like a high fashion still shot of the movie 300. I love it. Olga Shere's complexion was also a good choice to highlight the colors of the dress too. I love Lanvin and Elbaz.

West to East

With the flailing about of the US economy, recession materializing and US people scared to be more materialistic, high fashion is tailoring to a new market.

Russian references at various fashion houses, Asian school girl short skirts, injection of asian models on the runway, modern Kimono structure, and asian prints and colors. Gucci, Dior, Chanel are the major houses that is pioneering this movement. Other will follow, which will be seen in other collection for Fall 2008, and other smaller ones will most likely follow suit for Spring 2009.

Millionaires and billionaires are popping up like a strand of super chicken pox and measles in the east, mainly India, Russia and China. I used a viral disease because it also seems contagious, the increase in individual wealth and increase in number of those individuals. Most of them are silent and less flamboyant than those in the west. Asian women and those in the east are appearing more in not just the runway, but the audience. A prime example is the latest Chanel Couture show. Devon Aoki closing a show is not a coincidence, it's strategic marketing ploy to attract more Asian women to be interested in Chanel.

There's a shift in global interest. There has been an exponential grow of interest in Asian art and travel. Economic wise, China has had a new government change where a younger generation is coming in place. A generation that is more knowledgeable and up-to-date with global issues. China's economist rivals Greenspan and Bernanke. South Korea, a somewhat overlooked country is starting to wake up. There's just A LOT of activity in the east and everything is reflecting that. There's a new toy, the east, for everyone to play with, which is what is happening in shifting interest.

I'll write more about this but just wanted to share what I thought was interesting in the effect of global economy on the fashion industry.

Couture-off Spring 2008

Which gown would you like for your sweet sixteen?

Me? Why not both? Entrance with the Lacroix and change mid-way into Chanel. I think I should be a stylist for MTV's Super Sweet 16. Those children know diddly squat(nothing).

But seriously, these gowns probably took over 450 hours each to make. The intricate detail, sculpting, gems and jewels. I love the Lacroix's collar and how it accentuates her arms, or skeleton of an arm. What you're supposed to do is take it as it is, or take what you like it and alter the rest. For the Lacroix dress, I would take everything from where her hand meets up, and then from that point on, just have the dress fall directly down into a flowing gown. Maybe by doing that I'll also get 20000USD off of the price since less labor??

For the Chanel, I love the jewels and gems embroideries and the volume so I want to keep that. I would just shorten the trail and make it fall around my waist as well, but still with a little volume. Don't get me wrong, the dresses themselves are spectacular and if I was 6'2+ I would wear them, but for me, I will have to settle for slender silhouettes to stretch out my body average length body. Basically the dresses would turn out like below:

"Omg, that Britney's Shameless"

Do you think in Britney's Piece of Me song, the lyrics that says "omg, that Britney's Shameless" was referring to her acts or her wardrobe? I think most of it is her wardrobe. I don't even understand where her style comes from. Influence wise. It's not L.A. scene, Hollywood glamor, or Louisiana southern Belle (this style is basically Hollister TShirt, Hollister tote, Hollister everything, like her little pregnant sister. JK! about the everything, maybe UGG shoes...). Her wardrobe malfunctions a little bit too much to be considered malfunction. It seems like her style is malfunctioning too.

As a fan, I'm hopeful and forced to believed that she understands the media's attention on her so she dresses this way to give the media what they want. But, she leads a different life at home. At home, she wears Chanel tweed jacket in her Library filled with first editions of Wittgenstein's Logisch-Philosophische Abhandlung, deconstructionist, existentialist, logical positivist works, sippin' on a mojito because she likes the mint and sugarcane taste. She sleeps in a Pucci gown, shower, brush her teeth and change into a Christian Lacroix couture gown for breakfast, which consist of a baguette and butter freshly shipped from Paris in the morning, followed by changing into her public costume. A Britney Spears fan, fashion fanatic can hope.

Messagerie Spring/Summer 2008

I always loved Messagerie. It's like Diesel, but not overrated and more thought out in presentation and design. If you know me, you know I like the layered but clean look.

That jumpsuit on the other hand. If I was a gay(or "post-metrosexual") car technician, I would totally be over it. Something about wearing a jumpsuit in public no longer appeals to me after that J-Lo era. Some people are trying to bring it back but...I don't know. I remember seeing it at Sears in 2005 and I turned to my friend and said overalls and jumpsuit are sadly going to be making a comeback in the next 5 years. She thought I was joking, but I'm getting the last laugh now, but in a sad way. Some trends predictions you kind of hope you're wrong on. YA KNOW?

I digress. I wonder what Messagerie's photographer told Douglas Reich to accentuate when he was in the overall. Did the photographer said ,"GIVE ME CAR TECHNICIAN!" and Douglas Reich, the model by the way, decided to pose like that. Whatever it may be, it makes me want to quit business school and become a car technician-just so I could look that fabulous.

Zegna Spring/Summer 2008

When I'm in my 30s with assets exceeding 500gs, annual income of 100gs+, I will be a Zegna man. The tailored suit screams class. Zegna's elegance aesthetic appeal and their craftsmanship are notorious in the fashion industry, for the more mature generation. The younger one associates themselves more with D&G, Dior Homme, Jil Sander, etc.

These ads make me want to be a great mind, makes me want to have Zegna suits lined up in my Goyard chest for travels, makes me want to wear them after having the dry cleaner super starch them so after closing a deal in China, I could doubly, wear them on the great wall of china and frolick with Chinese children, whose wardrobes are also pristine and immaculate.

After my young and foolish, carefree phase, I want to be a Zegna man. I want to be a Zegna man now but finances and tailoring doesn't allow it. Yet.

Obsession of the Day: Damier Louis Vuitton Loafers

The smooth calf leather, the Damier pattern on the vamp! I just image what it looks like looking down on it and seeing that Damier moka lacquer shinning back at me. It's a tad pricey($680), but it's Louis.

But for that same, price I rather get this Dior Homme shirt and wallet:

So I check eluxury regulary, daily, hourly, half-hourly. I'm sort of obsessed - or bored. But When I was checking it just a few minutes ago, their main page was up, but when I saw these Louis Vuitton Loafers with the checkered prints on them, after clicking, it led me to that page. How horrible! Requesting me to check back later? That's unheard of. Ok. I'm dramatic but I was excited because they're putting up the spring stuff right now and I wanted to see what I can, or most of the products, can't afford. Hope the site is up so I could show you my shoe obsession of the day.

Christian Dior Couture Spring 2008

At Christian Dior, the girls never weigh less than 100 lbs each.

John Galliano put out another couture show to accentuate his mastery in volume and detail. This dramatic muted pastel colors referenced the east, and the work seemed like a surpressed holding of his Maddamn Butterfly couture for Spring 2007 synthesized with his Couture Fall 2007 show. This time, it moved a little bit more north with a reference of Vienna's Klimt shapes and color.

What first came to mind for me, however, was exotic flowers. Especially this one:

It made sense to me because his Spring collection was quiet, and this seemed to be the unflowering, or deflowing of the Spring collection. To me, it's as though he was telling the Dior fan that his craftmanship has not gone dormant and he has not grown content like it seemed with his Spring 2008 collection.

Though this collection was true to his nature, it seemed like a transitional collection because it didn't inject something new and grandiose like his normal couture collection. Galliano prefers his workers to call him Master, and it is clear through his construction, his collections, and the fluidity of the whole house season to season that he is worthy of that name.

Mix-N-Match; Lavin Karan

Is it me or when I mix these two pieces, the detailed full skirt from Donna Karen and Lanvin's voluminous petal Lanvin top, it looks like a Carolina Herrera outfit? Heh. I love the Lavin silk flower top because it's so light looking. Even though a shoulder is bare, the top still radiates class. It comes close to even possibly replacing the white button up blouse/shirt. I could see someone from Vogue wearing this to work nonchalantly. I love how the look looks easy and effortless. The floral pattern on the skirt reference the floral fringe of the top. I instantly love the skirt when I first saw it and as I was going through Lanvin, I saw how they went well with each other. This look also accentuates feminity since the volumes of the skirt and the top highlights the cinch of the waist.

One rule to remember when trying to look effortless is to look clean, which means light colors. Sometimes, if you're wearing two pieces (instead of a dress) and you want to stand out and look effortless and airy, just throw on a new pair of white shirt or a bottom that is white (white skirt, white pants, white jeans). (Please note, there's a difference between neon colors and light saturated colors). And when wearing a light piece, like something white or light, bright yellow, one do one piece. Two pieces of the same color is too much, which is fine if you're looking for attention since your parents didn't give you any when you were little. Just remember it's negative attention.

Simple Examples(please note these are literal, of course there are exceptions):
1. Black top+black bottom+x=good outfit
x=white shoes and/or white belt and/or white pearls

2. neon yellow skirt+neon yellow top=GROSS
neon yellow skirt+white lanvin top=Better

3. pastel yellow bottom+pastel yellow=Sounds Gross
pastel yellow bottom+White button up blouse+pair of louboutin heels=Spring 2008

Rule of thumb to playing safe is to always have one piece that stands out to highlight it self, and to highlight the pieces that it's popping out from. Unless you're Parisian and into that dark, broody monotone. If you choose to do that(monotone), make sure there's One piece that pops out whether it is through the cut, or pattern.

Example:
Black jeans+black jacket+black louboutin+??=good outfit
??= black satin socks or satin shirt(black jacket goes over) or black button up shirt with tuxedo fringe going down

I love this summer in the park look! Lim's saturated yellow short skirt is a must-have stable in your spring wardrobe. It brightens up a wardrobe and gives it a clean look. I love this combo because Vera Wang's Greecia-slouch top gives it this airy feel, making it seem less weighty for a hot, humid day. The single shoulder strap accentuates the ease of the wardrobe, giving it a casual chic look. The yellow skirt then pulls everything together and gives it a clean look instead of "I'm sweating all over, I'm dirty" feel. I also like how Phillip Lim's yellow skirt compliments the gold sequin strings in Wang's top.

I saw these PUMAs while roaming at Nordstorm this morning around 6am and being that it was 6am, they seemed perfect. The corduroy, the faux fur trims, the 11 degree farenheit weather - it all fits together. I love the orange trimming too. It's a nice juxtapose between classics(corduroy) and new (rubber strap and saturated orange). AND it's currently on sale for 36.99USD! Can't beat that! It's such a spring/summer shoe too.

"Youth market gets suited up"

International Herald Tribune has this article on how...well... the "youth market gets suited up." Basically, the younger generation (20-40, I know. That's a big bracket), are getting more interesting in fashion, especially conservative post-modern dress up: the fitted Thom Browne suits, the Hedi Slimane-Dior Homme skinny silhouette cut. All this is pretty well known if you're a follower of fashion.

However, what I thought to be doubly interesting is that, this exposure to fashion from the younger generation is equally influenced by the more "liberal" look. The availability of choices of clothes are so huge that people have no problem expressing themselves and are willing to spend as much money in doing so. The youth generation doesn't just get suited up...they get expressive, personalized, and individualized. Boys and girl love Westwood, Galliano, and Holland, Pugh too!

But anyway, read the article. It's a fun short read.

I'm currently having information overload right now! As you have seen, I've been trying to keep up to date on men shows from Milan and Brazil. I'm pretty much up to date on Brazil, or at least from the access that I'm given to. Milan, I still have another 17 to go! AND, that exclude the Paris men shows that started today!

If you're aware of the shows that go on within the small time of each city, the number of shows that I'm posting and will post are only partial of a whole, a little bit over half. However, they are the main shows in which little shows tend to follow suit. However however, this does not mean that small shows can be innovative and present possibly better collections than the main houses. It's know that 20% of houses and designers control 80% of the retail revenue. Therefore, if you have exposure of other collections, overlooked designers and labels, please let me know!

If you haven't noticed, I've been resizing and recroping images so that you get what you want to see, the clothes. Well...sometimes the model too, which I've also included instead of decapitating them.

I wanted to write at least a paragraph on each of the collections I've seen so far but since it takes so much time to crop them, put them together, upload them, it's difficult for my brain to focus on something comprehensible. Perhaps at the end of the season or a night I'll dedicate to pulling an all-nighter, I'll go back and do them.

I hope you've enjoyed them all so far. I've only started an interest in Rio fashion week this year and it's been an interesting week for them. Some of the collections are Extremely impressive, accentuating the bias of mainstream fashion. The least I could do was shed some deserving light to them among the milan, paris, and new york shows. I'll be looking out for the east shows to.

Ok, so I don't understand this collection. There were soccerballs lining the runway so I assumed this must be targeted towards soccer(football to some) aficionados and players. Pilati decided to showcase YSL men fall/winter 2008 collection via film. I haven't seen it uploaded around the net yet, but once I find it, I'll post it. I just saw Pilati in Arena Homme and he looked really attractive. He sort of let himself go here? He's such a cute adorable man though and I'm excited to see the video.

Pilati is continueing his collaboration with art through installation. Miuccia and Marc Jacobs are known for integratting art with their words but through different means for Vuitton and Prada. Whether it is through logos or fabrics, or prints, the two brands are synonomous with their creative director and the collaboration with arts. Pilati, I believe, is one of the most overlooked designer for his skills. If it wasn't for YSL, I don't think most people would even give him the time of day. He's still fairely new to the house, relative to how designers come and go in houses nowadays. However, his cut, designs, and incorporation of technology and art in his works are unprecedented. His men's collection last year incorporated paint splattered in a modern post-Pollock style through saturated colors, which other artists are following suit now. His minimalism speaks volume, like the piece Freja wore for the Spring 2008 collection.

I'll speak more when the video is released. I'm excited to see this menswear collection. The pieces are already more than they are (through construction and design) through their presentation via video installation.
